Storage Classification Guide

Work out what is being stored, whether it is high-piled combustible storage, and which IFC Chapter 32 requirements and NFPA 13 chapters apply - so the code books open to the right page.

Code edition

This is the edition your department has adopted, the #{ adoptedCode }. Its referenced sprinkler standard is NFPA 13 (#{ nfpaEdition }).

Your department has adopted the #{ adoptedCode }. The selected edition's referenced sprinkler standard is NFPA 13 (#{ nfpaEdition }).

Pick the edition your jurisdiction has adopted - section numbers and pile limits moved between editions. Its referenced sprinkler standard is NFPA 13 (#{ nfpaEdition }).

1. What is being stored?

Nothing matched - pick the class directly below, or describe the product mix against the class definitions.

#{ refFor(selectedClass.referenceKey) }

Group A plastics - polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, PET, ABS, polycarbonate, polyurethane, most rubbers - are the high-hazard group. Classify them by whether they are expanded (foamed) and whether they are cartoned (shrink-wrap and paper wrap do not count as a carton).

Group B plastics - natural rubber (nonexpanded), silicone rubber, cellulosics, nylon - classify as Class IV.

Group C plastics - PVC, PTFE, melamine, phenolics - classify as Class III.

Free-flowing Group A plastics (pellets, powders) classify as Class IV - they flow out of the fire instead of stacking in it. #{ refFor('plasticsGroups') }

2. How is it arranged?

#{ selectedArrangement.description }

3. What is it sitting on?

#{ selectedArrangement.label } usually sits on no pallets - leave this on wood unless the loads really are on plastic ones.

4. How high, and how big?

The storage area is what is designated, intended or actually used for high-piled storage - including aisles between and around the storage, not just the footprint of the racks or piles. #{ refFor('areaSize') }

The determination

Commodity
#{ determination.effective.short }
Reclassified from #{ determination.base.short } by the pallet rule.
High-hazard High-piled storage High-piled where the official requires Not high-piled Table 3206.2: #{ determination.row.label } #{ editionLabel }
Pick a commodity to start. The determination builds here as the questions are answered, with the code section behind every line.

What this situation requires

#{ requiredCount } #{ requiredCount === 1 ? 'requirement' : 'requirements' } and #{ advisoryCount } to check. Open a line for what the code says and the section it comes from.
